Engineered wood flooring vs solid wood flooring in Dubai
The honest answer for most UAE buildings: engineered wood flooring is the right call. The construction (plywood or HDF core, hardwood top layer) is dimensionally stable in our humidity swings. Solid wood flooring works in well-conditioned villas with stable AC and good substrate prep, but it will move more.
- Engineered wood flooring — 3-layer or multi-layer plywood/HDF core with 2.5–4mm hardwood wear layer. Most common spec in UAE projects.
- Solid wood flooring — single-piece hardwood, 18–22mm thick. Premium feel, more careful installation, requires good AC discipline.
- Laminate wood flooring — printed photographic top on HDF. Cheaper, harder, and more scratch-resistant than wood, but it isn't wood. Sometimes the right call for rentals.
